9 Clean [Actually Incredible] Perfumes for Fall

Plus What Does Clean Perfume Actually Mean — What to Look For –

We’ve gotten pretty good at paying attention to what goes on our skin. We scrutinize our skincare, swap out questionable ingredients, and think twice about what we’re putting on our bodies. But (for me at least) perfume has gotten a little bit of a pass because up until lately the options were... a little lacking and a little granola.
And it's something I know should've been top of the swap out list because perfume is something we’re literally spraying directly onto our skin, often on some of the thinnest and most absorbent areas of the body: our neck, wrists, chest, etc.
Now “clean” and “non-toxic” aren’t regulated terms and not every brand using the language is held to the same standard. But the brands and perfumes we’re highlighting here restrict ingredients of concern like phthalates and PFAS, while also making a greater effort toward ingredient transparency. And bonus (or actually the whole point) they truly smell incredible.

Henry Rose was founded by Michelle Pfeiffer because she wanted a fragrance she felt comfortable wearing around her babies, the brand was built around a pretty simple idea: you should actually know what’s in your perfume.
The brand is EWG Verified (major) and offers 100% ingredient transparency. That’s a big deal in fragrance, where “fragrance” or “parfum” can legally appear on an ingredient list without revealing every individual component behind it.
For fall, check out Dave, a sultry cocoa powder vanilla and one of their most popular in the whole lineup (designed specifically because her husband always found her sexiest in vanilla), or Rhu Berry, which gives a very berry rhubarb dessert with a little musk underneath. Just very clean and very sexy.
Top Notes: Tangerine Heart, Neroli, Pink Pepper
Middle Notes: Lavandin, Orange Flower, Almond Blossom
Bottom Notes: Vanilla Bean Chantilly, Cocoa Shell, Tonka Bean

Top Notes: Rhubarb Stalks, Orange Oil, Pink Pepper Extract
Middle Notes: Strawberry Jam, Osmanthus Flower Absolute, Fleshy Peach
Bottom Notes: Choux Pastry, Sensual Musk, Sandalwood

PHLUR helped pioneer the clean fragrance space, but these days the brand prefers to focus on ingredient transparency and intentional formulation rather than the word “clean” itself. They disclose their full fragrance ingredient profiles, use a mix of natural and synthetic ingredients, and are cruelty free and vegan.
Vanilla Skin is one of my personal most worn fragrances. I’ve gone through multiple bottles of the body mist it’s exactly what it sounds like: delicious, sexy, your skin but better vanilla with warmth and a little spice. The body mists also have incredible lasting power which can be hit or miss with the clean fragrance space. Warm, addictive vanilla, cozy but sexy.
Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Pink Apple, Sugar Crystals
Middle Notes: Lily, Jasmine Petals, Cashmere Wood
Bottom Notes: Benzoin, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Agarwood

Heretic is becoming my newest obsession as we speak. Yes, the packaging is beautiful, but this is not your typical clean fragrance brand. She's the hot goth of the perfume world: darker, earthier, provocative.
They build their fragrances around expressive botanical ingredients and list every ingredient. Their products exclude phthalates, parabens and formaldehyde, among other ingredients.
Even the collaborations are on brand. Think Nosferatu (the darkly iconic vampire film) and fragrances that explore the stranger, more untamed side of nature with a few even based on poisons and carnivorous plants. And yes I did already purchase The Season of the Witch sample box, I will report back.
Top Notes: Apple Accord, Green Leaves, Cardamom, Saffron
Middle Notes: Black Tea, Dark Plum, Labdanum, Frankincense
Bottom Notes: Oakmoss, Vetiver, Ambered Woods, Skin Musk
Top Notes: Lilac, Ambrette
Middle Notes: Petrichor, Violet Absolute, Orris Concrete, Cypriol
Bottom Notes: Vegan Ambergris, Oud, Labdanum

Right off the bat Skylar has a younger, flirtier energy as a brand. They focus on hypoallergenic fragrances and have a restricted ingredient list of of over 1,300 ingredients, including phthalates and parabens, that they choose not to use in their formulas.
I’ve been wearing Citrus Reverie all summer. I cannot put my finger on which note it is, but something in the blend smells exactly like having a fruity cocktail while getting ready for a night out with your girls I swear.
Their newest fragrance, Fated Flame, is a completely different direction. They're calling it a slow burn romance, think jammy cherry purée and chocolate ganache. It’s decadent, rich and sultry, you (or whoever) might almost want a taste.
Top notes: Bergamot, Cherry Puree, Ginger Zest
Middle notes: Black Rose, Orris Butter, Chocolate Ganache
Base notes: Amber, Oud, Sandalwood

Founded by beauty journalist Bee Shapiro, Ellis Brooklyn was one of the early brands in the clean fragrance space. If you’ve come across Ellis before, there’s a good chance it was Miami Nectar or Isla Serena, both of which feel like a downtown Summer rooftop or a boat party. But for fall, the brand has a few deeper fragrances worth checking out.
Plum Tonic feels like a pomegranate martini at Thanksgiving. Everything around you is buttery, rich and indulgent, and you just need a sparkling, fruity little break. It’s cold and effervescent, with juicy plum and sparkling mandarin.
Top Notes: Sparkling Mandarin, Plum Nectar, Açaí
Middle Notes: Peony Petals, Iris Flower, Violet Leaf
Bottom Notes: Amber Crystals, Cashmere Woods, Sugared Musks

DedCool is a Los Angeles-based, unisex brand known for taking fragrance way beyond the perfume bottle. They do everything from laundry detergents to car fresheners all with the same scent profile (you could really have a top to bottom signature scent here.)
Their cult-favorite Taunt is a different kind of vanilla. Yes, it’s there, but bergamot and fresh notes give it a little citrus, a little freshness. If you’re not into the full on gourmand vanilla cupcake thing, this is a great alternative that still feels warm and sexy.
Then there’s Mocha Magic, which was practically made for the -ber months. It’s an espresso martini in perfume form, with coffee, chocolatey mocha and creamy, boozy notes. But you won’t smell like a dessert it’s more about that rich, delicious depth that makes a fragrance feel elevated and perfect for the cozier months.
Top Notes: Espresso, Mocha, Cream
Middle Notes: Biscotti, Toffee, Bourbon
Bottom Notes: Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood

Commodity is a modern fragrance brand known for its minimalist approach and its fragrances built around recognizable scent profiles, from paper and wood to (you guessed it) milk. They also offer fragrances in different scent intensities, so you can choose how much of a presence you want your perfume to have.
Glancing at the fragrance notes, you might assume this perfume is a straight up vaporized s’more. But rather than giving Jessica Simpson edible body dessert line, this is a milk perfume, which softens all that sweetness. Milk fragrances have a lactonic scent profile, meaning they’re built around creamy, milky, buttery or comforting, soft skin aromas.
So yes, Milk by Commodity is a very sweet, nutty marshmallow perfume, but it’s rounded off in a soft, creamy way. They carry that buttery through line into a few other scents, too, including Milk Orchid and Milk+ Spice, if you want to explore the family a little further.
Top Notes: Toasted Sesame
Middle Notes: Warm Marshmallow, Cold Milk Accord
Bottom Notes: Mahogany Wood, Tonka Bean, Benzoin
