One of the most frustrating parts of cutting out toxic products? Letting go of my Bath & Body Works wall plug-ins. I love a home that smells amazing, the kind of scent you notice the second you walk into a room. It’s one of those little details that makes a space feel expensive, like walking into the lobby of a nice hotel. How do they always smell so good? I went down the rabbit hole to find out, and now I’ve got all the best ways to make your home smell like a luxury hotel, minus the most of the toxins.
Welcome to the Four Seasons
A lot of high end hotels use cold air diffusers like Vitruvi or AromaTech (you can get the same look for less with this Vivitest Ceramic Diffuser or Onabovivia Diffuser.) What I didn't know was that most of the main hotels have a signiture scent!
You can buy the concentrated oil blend right from AromaTech or you can make your own with essential oils;
Ritz-Carlton: White tea, bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood
Four Seasons: Green tea, citrus, cedar wood
Edition Hotels: Leather, black tea, amber, and tobacco
St. Regis: Rose, peony, warm vanilla, and musk
1 Hotel: Eucalyptus, cedar wood, and sage
Clean, Fresh, Linen
The Laundress Fabric Spray smells like crisp, just washed linen. You can use it on clothing or sheets to release wrinkles or just spray it on the curtains to give the room a clean feel.
Make a fresh linen scent yourself by combining in a spray bottle;
1 cup distilled water
2 tbsp witch hazel or vodka
15 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Warm & Cozy
The Dedcool Taunt Air Freshener is the grown up, cool girl version of the little trees we used to hang in our cars. This scent is a warm amber, vanilla, and bergamont which feels warm and cozy yet sophisticated.
Make a warm and cozy scent yourself by combining in a spray bottle;
1 cup distilled water
2 tbsp witch hazel or vodka
10 drops vanilla essential oil
8 drops sandalwood or amber essential oil
Earthy, Woodsy, Luxe
We're in the Aesop realm now. Their Cythera Room Spray is a deep, smoky vetiver and sandalwood fragrance that is the epitome of making your home smell like a hot man. Or a personal favorite the Palo Santo Spay by River Birch; grounding, sexy, pretty but masculine.
Make a woodsy scent yourself by combining in a spray bottle;
1 cup distilled water
2 tbsp witch hazel or vodka
10 drops cedar wood essential oil
8 drops sandalwood essential oil
Citrus & Bright
The Caldrea Linen & Room Spray in Pear Blossom Agave is a clean, slightly sweet citrus, and floral scent. It's bright, energizing, and perfect if you want your home to smell like spring cleaning all the time.
Make a citrusy scent yourself by combining in a spray bottle;
1 cup distilled water
2 tbsp witch hazel or vodka
15 drops mandarin or wild orange essential oil
10 drops bergamot essential oil
Clean Slate
A house that smells amazing starts with a clean house. Take a minute to deep clean a few of the areas we (me) usually forget about that can cause bad smells;
The inside of the trash can. Scrub it out and leave a paper towel in the bottom soaked with a few drops of essential oils.
The filter in the bottom of the dishwasher. Just trust me, it needs to be pulled out and scrubbed clean.
The garbage disposal. Next time you use oranges, lemons, or limes save the peel! Use some citrus peels, baking soda, and vinegar to deep clean the inside.
Pillows. Even with pillow cases your pillows need some love once in a while. Most dryers have a steam clean function that will sanitize your pillows (amazing if you struggle with acne!)
Curtains and drapes. They absorb smells constantly so every once in a while they need to be steam cleaned or tossed in the wash.
Remotes and game controllers. Because we touch them so often they get filled with oils and bacteria you can use an alcohol wipe to keep them clean.
Under the fridge and oven. Such an easy one to forget about. This is a hotspot for dust, food spills, and pet hair.
Indoor plant soil. Over watering can cause mold and smell musty so be sure to let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
