If your skin is looking a little rough right now, you're not alone. Maybe this looks like under eye bags, noticing more fine lines than usual, dullness, or texture and acne scars looking extra visible. Whether you just made it through an Arizona summer or you're heading into a Montana winter the culprit may be dehydration, as the seasons change our skin tends to take a hit. It doesn't matter if you have dry, combo, or oily skin, dehydration affects every skin type. Even making oily skin produce more oil to overcompensate for the lack of moisture.

The tricky part of dealing with dehydrated skin is that drinking some extra water isn't enough to plump it back up. While drinking water is great for every function in our bodies it's not enough on its own for hydrating the epidermis, our outermost layer of skin. So what is?

Toners

A toner is typically a liquid product that 'helps the skin appear hydrated, removes excess oil and impurities, and visibly tightens the pores.' Toners increase hydration by prepping the skin to receive more moisture. Imagine dry soil: if you pour water on it, most of the water runs off without being absorbed. But if you lightly mist the soil first to moisten it, then pour the water, it will soak in much better. That's exactly how a toner is functioning on dehydrated skin.

Masks

Masks are treatments that you can use 1-2 times per week to give your skin a little extra love. They contain a high concentration of ingredients and take 15- 30 minutes to soak in. Masks are a great tool because they give your skin time to absorb and show immediate results.

Moisturizers

Your moisturizer is the most important component to hydrating your skin. Regardless of what products you use in your skin care routine your moisturizer is what seals everything in. Look for a moisturizer that fits your skin type and don't be afraid to swap it out as the seasons change, you might need extra hydration in drier seasons. They can range from lightweight gel textures like the Biossance Gel Moisturizer which is amazing for oily skin types to thicker cream textures like the Cetaphil Hydrating Cream for sealing everything in and supporting your natural skin barrier (both personal favorites of mine.)

As the seasons change it's normal for your skin to have its ups and downs. Rather than stressing over every imperfection, have a little grace and take some time to focus on hydration and self-care. With the right routine (toners, masks, and a good moisturizer) you can revive your skin and give it the love it deserves. Embrace the changes, and soon enough, that glow will be back!
